Youssou N’Dour is a Senegalese singer, songwriter, and composer widely regarded as one of the most influential African musicians of all time. Born on October 1, 1959, in Dakar, Senegal, he is a pioneer of the mbalax genre, which blends traditional Senegalese rhythms with jazz, soul, and Afro-Cuban influences.
N’Dour gained international acclaim with his 1994 duet 7 Seconds featuring Neneh Cherry, which became a global hit. Over his career, he has released numerous albums, including Set and Egypt, which won him a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary World Music Album in 2005.
Beyond music, N’Dour is an advocate for social justice and has served as Senegal’s Minister of Tourism and Culture. He continues to use his platform to promote African heritage and unity.
