Black Coffee

Black Coffee, born **Nkosinathi Innocent Maphumulo** on **March 11, 1976**, in Umlazi, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, is a world-renowned DJ, record producer, and songwriter, He is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in the global dance music scene.

Early Life and Education

Black Coffee grew up in a musical environment, influenced by his uncle’s extensive reggae collection. At the age of 12, he moved to Umtata with his mother after his parents divorced. In 1990, while celebrating Nelson Mandela’s release from prison, he was involved in a car accident that left him with a brachial plexus injury, resulting in the loss of use of his left arm.

He studied Jazz Studies at Technikon Natal (now Durban University of Technology) but left school early to focus on his music career 

Career

Black Coffee began his career in 1994 and gained recognition after participating in the Red Bull Music Academy in 2004

He established his record label, Soulistic Music, and released his debut album, Black Coffee, in 2005 – The album incorporated elements of R&B and jazz and was well-received in South Africa 

Over the years, he has released several successful albums, including Africa Rising, Pieces of Me, and Music Is King, which won the Grammy Award for Best Dance/Electronic Album in 2020 – He has collaborated with numerous international artists, such as David Guetta, Alicia Keys, and Usher.

Personal Life

Black Coffee was married to TV presenter and actress Enhle Mbali Mlotshwa from 2011 to 2019. They have two children together, Anesu and Asante. He also has two children, Lilitha and Esona, from a previous relationship.

Awards and Recognition

Black Coffee has received numerous accolades throughout his career, including eight South African Music Awards, four DJ Awards, two Metro FM Awards, and a BET Award for Best International Act: Africa

Black Coffee continues to be a prominent figure in the music industry, inspiring many aspiring DJs and producers around the world.
